Striker Stuart Zanone has been left stunned after scoring all seven goals in Ashford United’s 7-0 win at Lingfield on Tuesday night.
The 29 year old striker bagged a hat-trick in the first half of the Southern Counties East Football League fixture and followed it up with an incredible four more in the second period to claim a new club record.
Having smashed all seven goals in the win, Zanone took his tally for the season to 44 and told Kent Sports News how the achievement was only just sinking in after a good night’s sleep:
“I’m pleased, excited and glad we won. I think it’s just starting to sink in as last night I wasn’t that bothered. It’s quite a nice feeling.”
“At half time they looked dead and buried and I though I might get one or two more in the second half, but I thought some of the other boys would score.”
“They kept looking for me and everything fell for me and I was glad to get the next four!”
“I scored four for us just after Christmas against Canterbury and the record for Ashford was five. At half time I was thinking I could get the record tonight and I obviously did.”
When you score seven goals in one game, a striker could be forgiven for forgetting how they all went in, but Zanone remembers all of them:
“I can remember every one – I think the sixth was my best. I scored just the one tap in and the rest were all good goals and all seven were with my right foot!”
Having bagged 44 goals for the season now, Zanone admits he has gone past his initial target, but might be prevented from scoring too many more:
“I joined eleven games in and my target was thirty with a target for next year being fifty as I thought if I have a full season I can do it. Once I hit thirty goals, I thought getting to forty that would be good, but I just keep going.”
“I have got a game on Saturday and then I am away for two weeks on holiday, so I will miss the next three. We have got to play Phoenix Sports twice, so it’s going to be tough.”
“The club record is 46, so if I can break that I will be happy.”
Having scored so many goals in one game and throughout the season, Zanone is bound to attract attention from other clubs, but is happy to play with Ashford United:
“I have played at a higher level and played in the Ryman Premier League, but I didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t like all of the travelling and the midweek games being so far away.”
“As a forward, you can so many games without even touching the ball and I was just running about.”
“I’m 29 now and I’m never going to be a professional footballer. If I was younger I would be wanting to play as high as possible, but I just want to enjoy it and at my age it’s nice just scoring goals.”
“Full credit must go to my team-mates, I wouldn’t have been able to score the goals I do without them as they work hard.”
Most people would be forgiven for telling the world about the day they scored seven goals in one game, but for Zanone the feat isn’t that special having bagged more in a few games:
“I’ve scored more before in a few games. Obviously not in the league we are in, but I have scored nine once (in the Sunday league) and eight a couple of times (whilst playing for the Army).”
“If I ever have grandchildren, I will let them know!”
