Yeovil Town vs Welling United – Preview

Having had their unbeaten Vanarama National League South run ended on Tuesday evening, Welling United now have the challenge of trying to start their next one at league leaders Yeovil Town.

Their sequence of eight league games undefeated ended in a difficult evening at Farnborough when they had to repel a succession of corners and long throws before they failed to clear one sufficiently five minutes before half time and they went down to the only goal. Although the Wings missed a good chance in the second half, and a Cameron Green shot came back out off the post, the hosts’ goalkeeper did not have to make a real save.

One night earlier, Yeovil visited Aveley and were held to a goal-less draw. Despite the loss of two points, they still remain twelve points clear of second placed Chelmsford City and have played one game fewer. At home they are particularly strong having won fifteen, drawn three and are yet to lose. They have won their last six games at their Huish Park Stadium and haven’t dropped a home point since mid-December.

However, Welling won’t fear the Glovers as they enjoyed a good win at home back in November. Jordan Young put Yeovil ahead in the sixteenth minute but Kain Adom levelled nine minutes later and there was no further scoring in the first half.

Ten minutes after the break, Tristan Abrahams scored the first of an eleven minute hat-trick to give the Wings a stunning four-one victory.

This will be Welling’s first game at Yeovil since they visited in 2019 in the F.A. Trophy. Courtney Duffus gave the hosts a half time lead and Chris Dagnell added a second two minutes after the break. Duffus added a third goal six minutes later before a consolation goal by Rob Swaine in stoppage time gave the travelling Welling supporters something to cheer.

Since that day, the Wings have had multiple management and squad changes but they may have someone who played for them on that day in the squad on Saturday. Chiori Johnson is back at Welling and has returned from injury. He played the last seven minutes at Farnborough so will hope to be available for selection against Yeovil.
