Anthony Grant scored the only goal as Welling United stunned Vanarama National League South leaders Yeovil Town.

Before the game, Yeovil were unbeaten at home having won every game, bar three draws, in all competitions. However, having already beaten them four-one at home, the Wings completed a memorable double.

Early on, the hosts were in control and centre half Morgan Williams had two chances when coming up for corners.

The first one he got up well but headed over. Then he got in first but nodded wide. The Glovers were then forced into making a substitution when Michael Smith limped off and Jay Foulston replaced him.

Once they had settled, Welling started to impose themselves and Jason Adigun’s first time chip flew just over before Anthony Grant’s pass put him through. He squared to Reece Grant but a combination of Joe Day and Williams stopped him from forcing it home.

Frank Nouble broke his way through for Yeovil but shot straight at Reice Charles-Cook before Anthony Grant spotted Day off his line and tried his luck from the half way line but the Glovers’ goalkeeper got back to catch.

Sam Pearson’s clever lay back to Sonny Blu Lo-Everton gave him the opportunity to fire towards the bottom corner but Charles-Cook made an excellent save before Welling’s Antony Papadopoulos hit a shot sweetly but straight at Day.

After the break Welling continued to show that they had no intention of sitting back to defend and counter and a Cameron Green free kick just evaded Riccardo Di Trolio at the far post.

Another free kick presented Green with a further opportunity and this time he went directly for goal. Although Day couldn’t hold it, the hosts’ goalkeeper was relieved to be able to claim it before anyone could get onto the end of it.

Matthew Worthington shot over for Yeovil before Papadopoulos drew a great diving save out of Day with a twenty-five yard effort that was destined for the corner of the net. Terrific skills by Adigun were stopped by a last gasp tackle that squeezed it out to Reece Grant but he couldn’t get a shot away.

Just under twenty minutes remained when Welling scored the all important goal. Adigun pressurised both Day and Foulston into hurried passes and Charlie Cooper’s poor first touch was anticipated by Anthony Grant who took full advantage by nicking it away before lashing it home from a tight angle.

Looking for a quick response, Olly Thomas who had just come on as a substitute, hit a shot across the goal to which Charles-Cook must have got a hand as it went out for a corner. Papadopoulos then caused problems at the other end and a tackle on him fell into the path of Gene Kennedy who fired well over.

Williams was thrown forward by Yeovil manager Mark Cooper as an extra striker and Day joined the attack for corners and free kicks in the six minutes of stoppage time but it was to no avail as a couple of defensive headers by Lachlan Byrd and Joe Ellul, plus a commanding double fisted punch out by Charles-Cook repelled the danger.

Games are coming thick and fast for the Wings and they will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to fourth placed Hampton and Richmond Borough.
