Charlton kept up their run of form and maintained top spot after another win at Adams Park.

Charlton may have had a lucky mascot on Tuesday night. When the team coach arrived Yann Kermorgant accepted an inflateable monkey that was given to him by a fan!

The players had to warm up in a torrential downpour which, fortunately, abated by the time the game kicked-off.

Chris Powell opted to retain the same starting line-up and subs that performed so well against Carlisle on Saturday, though both Dale Stephens and Cedric Evina travelled with the squad. Stephens was probably omitted due to his new arrival while Evina was probably taken in case of any last minute problems with Johnnie Jackson’s tight hamstring.

Peterborough loanee, Grant Basey, filled the left-back berth for Wycombe and dealt with Danny Green well. Referee, Andy D’Urso, was roundly booed by the Addicks faithful who have still not forgiven him for calling off the Boxing Day game with Southampton. It has to be said that the Addicks were given magnificent backing by their fans throughout the game.

Kermorgant’s new talisman worked inside five minutes. The French striker attempted a spectacular overhead kick, which came back off the inside of the post for Wright-Phillips to tuck away with his left foot.

Wright-Phillips struck again just before the interval. Danny Hollands played a peach of a ball through for the top scorer to pick his spot, this time with his right foot.

Charlton were dominant in the first period and the three points seemed assured, but things are rarely that simple.

After the break the Addicks seemed content to sit on their lead and invite pressure. Wycombe got a real boost midway through the half when Stuart Beavon reduced the arrears. Ben Hamer made two terrific saves to foil the Chairboys but Beavon took advantage to slide home the loose ball.

Charlton wrested the initiative back after that for a while and though Wycombe continued to press, the visitors were never seriously threatened.

Andy Hughes, after Saturday’s good performance, again did the simple things in midfield, allowing Hollands to press further forward but Stephens is likely to be brought back to add more creativity at Hartlepool.
