Josh Wright has become Ebbsfleet United’s latest new signing, the 32-year-old midfielder bringing with him a wealth of experience gained across more than 400 games in the EFL.

An all-round skilful and visionary midfielder, Wright was a former Charlton Athletic and England international youth who played at Stonebridge Road when the Addicks reserves called it home. He went on to enjoy loan spells with the likes of Barnet and Brentford before spending two seasons in the Championship with Scunthorpe United. He stayed at that level following a move to Millwall in 2011 before the first of a couple of spells at Leyton Orient.

He was back in Kent in 2015, firing 14 goals from midfield as Gillingham’s captain, winning a number of player of the year awards at Priestfield in 2016/17. After three seasons with the Gills, Wright stayed in League One with Southend United and Bradford City and has since played for Leyton Orient once more and Crawley Town.

Most recently, he featured against the Fleet for Billericay Town during a six-month spell at the Blues and is now eager to get going under Dennis Kutrieb, telling the club website: “Last season, I could really see the style of the side and the way they were trying to play. I’ve had a chat with Dennis about the roles, where he sees me fitting in and what he would want me to do and it was music to my ears. Now I just want to get out there and to be working towards a successful season to take this club back up to at least where it deserves to be.” 

Fleet’s latest signing may also be familiar to some supporters as the younger brother of TOWIE star and former footballer Mark Wright, who played alongside his brother at Crawley as recently as 2020/21.
