Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh has appointed Josh Wright as club captain for the 2016/17 EFL League One season.

Wright, who rejoined the Gills last summer, wore the armband on a number of occasions last season in the absence of Doug Loft and John Egan.

“All I can say is that I am honoured, privileged, proud and delighted to be handed the captaincy and I can’t wait to lead this fantastic club and group of players next season, and hopefully beyond,” said the 26-year-old.

“Playing for such a great club is one thing but being captain tops it off. I can only thank the manager, the Gills fans, my team-mates and everyone associated with the club for that.

“I hope we can make the fans happy next season by being successful and, as club captain, I will do everything I can in my powers to make that happen.”

Speaking to the GFC website, manager Edinburgh said: “I’m delighted for Josh. He stood in as captain a few times last season, and did the armband proud, and is deserving of the captaincy.

“I have no doubt that he’ll be a great leader for this club both on and off the pitch.”

Edinburgh has also appointed goalkeeper Stuart Nelson as vice-captain.

“Nels has been a great servant for this club, he had an excellent season once again last year, and he’ll prove an excellent deputy,” said Edinburgh.
