There was heartbreak for Welling as they fell to defeat by the only goal scored in the final minute.
Loui Fazakerley and his management team gave their team instructions and tactics that the players fought hard to fulfil only for the pain of conceding a late goal by a player who was so important in the team’s survival a few months ago.
Not surprisingly, Fazakerley was frustrated. “The boys gave absolutely everything they’ve got. They played to the game plan all until a bit of long ball football from Wrexham. They are known for playing good football.
“It had to be an ex player, Dom Vose, who popped up with a bit of quality at the end.”
Unchanged from Tuesday night’s draw with Eastleigh, Welling fashioned a couple of early opportunities. George Porter headed wide when Kevin Lokko flicked on a Ricky Wellard corner. Then Reece Harris had a shot saved and Xavier Vidal’s follow up was blocked by a last ditch tackle.
After that, Welling were forced into showing their defensive qualities.
Javan Vidal netted but Wes York’s cross came from behind the bye-line then Dominic Vose took centre stage against his last club.
First he had an effort saved by Tom King, then he shot just wide from outside the area. Finally, he got into the penalty area but could not keep his flick under the bar.
After the break, it was York who caused the most immediate problems. Having tested King from 30 yards, he missed a great chance when set up by Adriano York before scuffing another opportunity for King to field.
Once James Gray had shot over from Evans’ cross, Welling enjoyed a little more possession.
They created a half chance of their own but Cameron Belford did well to beat out Sam Corne’s close range effort at his near post.
Vose had a shot turned over brilliantly by King before his last minute goal finally broke the Welling resistance. A long ball forward was cleared as far as Vose and he took a moment before smashing just inside the post.
A double substitution followed for Welling but it was too late for the strikers to make an impact.
