Games are coming thick and fast in the Vanarama National League South and Welling United have a Tuesday night trip to Worthing.
Before the matches over the weekend Worthing were league leaders so few would have expected them to lose as heavily as they did, four-nil at Braintree Town. Despite that, they remain in third place in the table, just one point behind new table toppers, Bath City.
Danny Bloor’s Wings come into the game on the back of a nil-nil draw at home to St Albans City. Although they were by far the better team in the first half, they struggled to create clear cut chances and were unable to convert possession into goals.
In the second half, it was more even and looked to be petering out into a goal-less draw until the Saints came on strongly for the last fifteen minutes. However, Ben Winterbottom wasn’t seriously tested and the honours were shared. Whilst failing to score was disappointing, it was a second consecutive clean sheet and extended The Wings’ unbeaten run to three games.
Before Saturday, Worthing had won five and lost once. They won their first three games, one-nil against Tonbridge Angels, three-nil at Torquay United, and four-one at Slough Town. They then suffered their first defeat, two-one at home to this season’s surprise package Aveley, before winning two nil, both at Dover Athletic, and at home to Weymouth.
Last season, Welling travelled to Worthing in January and in awful weather conditions the hosts looked like they had done enough when three nil up, just after the hour mark. However, Taylor Maloney pulled one back from the penalty spot and Daniel Nkrumah gave Welling hope when netting with five minutes remaining. Manny Parry might have equalised in stoppage time but did not get a clean strike and it went wide.
Two of Worthing’s goals that afternoon were scored by Lewis White who is now at Welling United. Further intrigue is added by the fact that Welling manager Danny Bloor is a former Worthing manager so he knows the club well.
