Worthing v Welling United preview

On Tuesday evening Welling United are in Vanarama National League South action for a game under the floodlights when they visit Worthing.

Rod Stringer’s Wings have an opportunity to bounce back from their disappointing home defeat against Weston-super-Mare on Saturday. They got off to a great start by going ahead in the second minute through Chukwu Anointed and were the better team for the first thirty minutes.

Then they conceded a needless free kick and failed to defend it for the visitors to draw level. Three minutes later, a refereeing howler resulted in Weston being awarded a penalty which they converted. The Seagulls controlled the match after that and scored a route one goal with twenty minutes remaining to seal the three points.

Meanwhile, Worthing also suffered a home defeat when beaten by Maidstone. Charlie Seaman put the Stones ahead in the eleventh minute and Sam Corne scored the second on the hour mark. That was their third league game without a win although they have knocked Havant and Waterlooville and Dartford out of the F.A. Cup during the period.

This will be just their third league home game of the season after stadium improvements and, in their home National League South games so far, they’ve drawn nil-nil with Hornchurch before their defeat against Maidstone.

In the corresponding match between Worthing and Welling last season, the hosts won two-nil. There had been little between the teams until Worthing were awarded a penalty with twenty minutes remaining. Once the fuss had settled down, Ollie Pearce netted from the spot. Ten minutes later, with Welling searching for an equaliser, Ricky Agular struck home from the edge of the penalty area.

Stringer may consider changes to his starting line up. Alex Lankshear made a promising full debut for Welling on Saturday, and his other new signings, Mitchel Bergkamp and Paul Osew, both came on in the second period. Charlie Pegrum will be available again, having served his one match suspension, and Chiori Johnson may also be back in contention following his spell out with injury.
