The FIA World Rallycross Championship, which attracted more than 10,000 spectators to Lydden Hill, has been described as “a truly awesome event”.
The Wooton-based circuit played host to the UK’s first round of the FIA World RX over the bank holiday weekend (24-25 June), and was hailed as a great success by all involved. The AUTOSPORT World RX of Great Britain featured a line-up of 38 stunning supercars in the headline class, while Norwegian Andreas Bakkerud coming out on top in an exciting and dramatic rallycross grand final.
Local ‘wild card’ entry Andrew Johnson also secured a podium finish, giving something for Kent-based fans to cheer.
Track owner Pat Doran has spoken of his happiness about how the event went over the weekend.
“It was a truly awesome event of which we are all very, very proud”, he said.
“An incredible amount of work has been done to turn Lydden into a world class venue and all those efforts have clearly been an enormous success.
“It was fantastic to see so many familiar old faces returning to Lydden and so many new rallycross fans all having such a great time. I can’t thank everyone enough for sharing such a momentous occasion with us and now – like all of them – can’t wait for the world championship’s return in 2015.”
Having been the birthplace of rallycross back in the 1960s, the 10,000-strong crowd for this weekend also represented Lydden’s biggest attendance in living memory, with both days of racing being full of exciting and intriguing drama.
