Having been linked with the vacant managerial position at Gillingham, Andy Woodman seems set to stick with Bromley.
The 50 year old former Arsenal and Newcastle United coach has made a massive impact at Hayes Lane since arriving to replace Neil Smith and has seen his Ravens side climb to fourth in the National League table following the 2-1 win at Grimsby Town on Saturday.
Despite Woodman having been given permission to speak with Gillingham by Bromley chairman Robin Stanton-Gleaves, no agreement has been reached and The Gills went into Saturday’s game against Steve Lovell still in charge on an interim basis.
Woodman had been heavily tipped to take over the reins from Lovell and guide Gillingham forward following Steve Evans’ departure, but that now seems incredibly unlikely.
Speaking after Saturday’s win at Grimsby, Woodman confirmed he is happy with his position at Bromley:
“It’s been a distracting week for numerous reasons, but we’ve kept our minds on the job here and now our minds are on the job Tuesday.”
“I have to be honest to myself and with my family, and I have to be honest with my chairman more importantly.”
“It’s dragged on a little bit and I think sometimes in life when things drag on a little bit you know it’s not the right thing.”
“So my focus is in Bromley, and that’s where it’s going to be.”
That seems to put an end to Woodman’s chances of being the next Gillingham manager with former QPR midfielder Marc Bircham now the favourite with the bookies to take over at Priestfield.
With Steve Lovell now having been back at Priestfield for two weeks, just a week until the transfer window closes and Shrewsbury Town coming to Medway on Tuesday night, many fans believe Lovell will be handed the role until the end of the season.
Sitting bottom of League One going into the Shrewsbury game, anything less than a win will do for a Gillingham side having equalled their worst ever record of no wins in fifteen games and that dates back to 1972!
