On Saturday, Welling United face the relatively short journey to Woking for a Skrill Premier encounter featuring the Blue Square Bet South Champions of the last two seasons.
Neither team will be short of confidence following their respective victories last Saturday.
Ross Lafayette scored the only goal as Welling saw off Grimsby Town in a game of few clear cut chances but the hosts were good value for their victory and will be keen to build upon it.
A first half sending off for Josh Payne made Woking’s task tougher at newly promoted Chester but they ran out comfortable 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Gavin Williams and Joe McNerney.
Last season, Welling upset the odds to win an F.A. Trophy game at Kingfield. Player-manager Jamie Day scored the only goal with an inch perfect free kick.
The last time former Wings captain, Jack Parkinson, played in a league fixture between the clubs, he scored the goal that put Welling ahead in what was to turn out to be a 2-1 defeat. Since then he has moved and established himself in the Woking first team. Loick Pires, however, did not have such a happy first season there, and after a loan spell with Boreham Wood, has now returned to Welling. He was instrumental in the Wings goal last Saturday and may well feel he has a point to prove on his return to the Surrey club.
Many Welling supporters will have happier memories of the fixture there during the season before when an Andy Pugh hat-trick helped Welling to a 5-0 win.
The Wings strengthened their squad on the day prior to the Grimsby game with the signing of England C International Harry Beautyman from Sutton United. Although starting on the bench, an early second half injury to Lee Clarke enabled him to make his league debut and his inclusion in the squad has increased the competition for a starting place.
Day, Kiernan Hughes-Mason and Sam Mott will miss out through injury for the visitors. None have figured yet this season but all are close to being ready for a return to further strengthen the squad.
