Woking 2-0 Welling United
Woking 2-0 Welling United

After a lacklustre performance two days earlier, Welling looked good until falling behind at Woking mid-way through the second half.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Although they continued to fight, once they conceded a second there was no way back for them.

Once again, against a team at the top end of the table they have looked every bit as good on the ball, but one point in six games since the opening game of the season is no reward for some good performances.

Head Coach, Matt McEntegart had said that despite playing well, the draw with Eastleigh and defeat at Wrexham left them feeling like ‘nearly men’. The loss at Woking echoed that.

Early on, Ricky Wellard and George Porter were both off target with wayward shots before John Goddard just failed to get on the end of a cross from Bruno Andrade, a thorn in Welling’s side throughout.

Porter then let fire with a shot that hit Reece Harris, wrong footing Jake Cole in the Woking goal, but flying wide of the unguarded side of the net.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Goddard shot wide from 20 yards before Wellard and Sam Corne both had shots blocked. Harris then tried his luck but Cole was equal to his daisy-cutter.

Another Goddard shot was saved after more good work by Andrade before Harris hit the crossbar with a cross-cum-shot.

Keiran Murtagh had a shot brilliantly saved by Tom King before the Welling keeper made hard work of dealing with a seemingly easier effort and was relieved to see the ball come down on the roof of the net.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

As the entertaining first half drew to a close, Xavier Vidal had a long shot well turned around by a diving Cole.

Immediately after the break, Andrade had more success down the left wing before shooting just beyond the far post however Welling continued to press and Vidal had another long range effort saved.

Daniel Holman’s shot was claimed comfortably by King before Woking took the lead. Having defended a corner well, a long punt forward sent Andrade away, and although Corne chased hard, he could not prevent the cross that found Goddard in acres of space to head home.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

For a few minutes, Welling were rattled and only an excellent last ditch tackle by Ben Jefford kept Woking out. Goddard then headed wide from a Holman corner.

Debutant substitute Jimmy Keohane made the game safe for the Cards minutes after coming on when he made space cleverly and fired in a shot that may have taken a deflection.

Welling came back with a Vidal free kick that flew just wide, and Cole had to save at close range from Porter, but it was another unhappy journey home for the Welling players and supporters alike.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Once again, Loui Fazakerley was left to reflect on what might have been. “When you dominate, like we did in the first half, you have to take your chances. It has come back to punish us again in the second half.

We’ve got a young group of lads who need to learn quickly as it’s a recurring theme. We are still searching for that complete 95 minute performance. Hopefully it will come against Tranmere on Saturday.
