Deal golf professional Peter Wilson produced a superb performance in the latest European Seniors Tour event at the weekend.
The 51-year-old, who is attached to Prince’s GC, won 15,000 Euros after finishing tied for second place in the Farmfoods European Seniors Masters at the Forest of Arden GC in Coventry, his best finish since joining the European Seniors Tour last year.
Wilson, who lives in Sandown Road, fired rounds of 68, 69 and 71 for a eight-under-par total of 208, the same as Austria’s Markus Brier, which left the pair two shots behind the winner, Spain’s Santiago Luna, and one shot in front former Ryder Cup duo Ian Woosnam and Peter Baker.
Wilson shared the lead with Luna going into Sunday’s final round and said: “I like the course, I finished 11th there last year and I’m over the moon to have finished second this time.”
His previous best finish this season was 11th in the Senior Italian Open in June and Wilson added: “I went back to see my coach, Mike De Villiers, in South Africa, and have now got a little bit more self-belief. Top players like Barry Lane and Jamie Kingston also give you words of encouragement and I when I play with these guys they don’t hit the ball any better than me, so I know if I can get my short game right I can compete with them.”
Wilson’s performance at Coventry lifted him to 50th position on the Seniors Tour Order of Merit, which should secure him a place in the Tour Championship in Mauritius in December. This week he is playing in the Paris Legends Championship, which starts on Thursday.
