Richard Cawley has written in Tuesday’s South London Press that Lawrie Wilson could be the next Charlton player to be going out on loan.
Utility player Wilson, equally at home in midfield or at right-back, has been included in every Addicks squad this season.
The Collier Row born player has made six starts in the Championship, plus a further seven appearances from the bench.
He played in both Capital One Cup games and scored twice in the 4-0 win against Colchester in the first round.
Wilson came through the Charlton academy but was released before he made a first team appearance. Chris Powell brought him back to The Valley when he signed him from Stevenage in the summer of 2012.
The plethora of midweek games are now over until the Christmas period, and with Joe Gomez fit again, Bob Peeters may want to get more game time into the 27-year-old. Wilson has regularly deputised for Chris Solly in midweek games of recent times.
Arsenal loanee, Francis Coquelin, can also cover at right-back but his loan spell ends after the televised match with Ipswich on 29 November, though his deal could be extended.
Charlton’s squad is hardly the biggest in the Championship, so it seems strange that the versatile Wilson could be heading out, even if only on a short term basis.
The inference has to be that Coquelin’s loan will be extended, another player is coming in or possibly both.
If Wilson – a cult hero with the fans – does leave, it will not be a popular move with the Valley faithful.
