After making his debut in the 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, Andy Wilmot has today announced he will compete in his first full season in 2015.
The 34 year old from Dartford will be taking to the track for Welch Motorsport and he has been working on securing a position on the grid for some time now, it is his dream to be back racing in the BTCC after his taster in 2015.
Realising it is the best place to be in British Motorsport, all the ducks are starting to line up to be able to compete in his first full BTCC season.
Speaking about securing his drive in the BTCC, Wilmot said: “It’s a dream come true for me and the reality has not really sunk in yet, I certainly have a lot to learn but over the winter months, with the test schedule planned, and a car that is very well sorted handling wise, I think Dan and John will get the best out of me.”
“The Team have a lot of experience in the BTCC and having watched the guys since last year, everything is coming together nicely.”
Wilmot had three strong finishes in his debut round at Rockingham in September 2013, when he took to the wheel of the Team HARD, VW and he knows that he has a lot of hard work to do in the closed season in terms of raising funds to race.
He added: “I still have a part of the budget to find but the support I am getting from my sponsors is outstanding. Everybody is as excited as myself, and we fully understand it is a big step up for me into Touring Cars, but I have a lot of experience and am willing to learn, exciting times lie ahead and with the test program planned, I just cannot wait to get going.”
Equally delighted to see Andy join his team for the upcoming season was John Welch, Team Principle, who is delighted that Andy has put his faith in the team.
He said: “We certainly did not have the best year with developing our own engines, Ollie and Dan were so patient with us it was rather humbling, but for next season TOCA is evaluating the engine parity regulations, and this certainly will make a big difference as we were affected more than others.
“As yet we have not taken the decision which way we will go engine wise, TOCA or our own, until we have completed the Dyno program with updated components and electronics that has been underway since the season finished with XtecR.
“Andy fits in well with us and has been working very hard to pull this deal together, and it’s our intention to ensure he is fully competitive and also enjoy his first complete season in the BTCC.”
