Andy Wilmot roared back in style last weekend as he took two victories in the VAG Trophy at Brands Hatch.
It was a welcome return to form for Wilmot after a tough start to the season in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. Along with the impressive victories in race one and two, Andy took pole position two fastest laps and a lap record.
Speaking after an excellent weekends racing to Kent Sports News a beaming Wilmot said: “I am really pleased with that, this weekend was a test of me, back in the driver’s seat in a proper race environment where the car is working that I can produce a result.
“I have bettered my expectations and it just makes me feel that I am good enough and up to the job. With the touring car situation it is a case of the engine being right and the electrical issues overcome and I think we can be good to go.”
Over the weekend at his home track it was a case of Andy proving to himself that he can go and win races and he did that in emphatic fashion.
He added: “It was really important, I was just starting to feel am I really up for this and when the car does get right can I do it. I had to do this and Tony has given me the opportunity to race and has given me a really good car.
“Dave Hayes my engineer this weekend has been fantastic, we have made a few changes to the car from what Howard Fuller usually runs and this is where we are now. I am soaking well with champagne and couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.”
The Team Hard VW Golf didn’t come home without a little damage, although Andy was so far ahead no one knows how the rear bumper started to work loose.
Laughing, Andy said: “To be honest that part of the car I don’t think was stuck on properly, that’s what I am going to say anyway. With the results that we have had this weekend I don’t think anyone is going to care in Team Hard, I think I will get that bit for free.
“The first race didn’t feel that fast to be honest, it was just trying to get away from the guys behind and maintain a gap. When the safety car came out it was here we go this will bring us together again. Where my advantage is I am quick on cold tyres in comparison, because of the training that I have had in the touring cars. That’s my advantage of the line and it means that I can build a gap in the first couple of laps. The safety car came out and luckily I had a good start after that and managed to keep a really good gap.
The second race was even better for Andy he raced off into the distance from the start and set fastest lap after fastest lap.
“We had a really good race, I managed to lap a few as well and to be honest there was a car that went off and there was a yellow flag, and I thought there was going to be a safety car. There wasn’t one and the yellow flag stayed out, and it didn’t really cause a problem. I think we had about a 12 second lead and I am more than happy and couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.”
