Williams targeting play-off spot

Gillingham head for play-off rivals MK Dons this weekend with midfielder Jonny Williams hoping to feature against one of his former sides.

Gills travel in eighth place, their hosts are sixth after beating AFC Wimbledon 3-1 on Tuesday and Williams (who made 13 appearances on load at Stadium MK in 2015) admitted, “We would rather be top of the League!”

“We understand down in the changing room that it is a tough division, and we understand that not everything has gone our way this year, there has been games that we should have won that we have not and there have been games that we have won that we should not have!”

“But that’s football and I think that we have an opportunity to get into the play-offs right in front of us if we win our games, it will be in our hands.”

“So, I think that we’d obviously rather be in the top three, we still believe that we can get there if we carry on our run and make it a winning run.”

“I’ve seen it happen in this League where teams have made that run and reached the top three, so it’s not out of reach.”

“We’d rather be in the top seven right now, but we still have that opportunity and at the start of the season that was the aim realistically with the teams in this League.”

“I want to do my best for the Football Club as it feels extra special as I come from Kent, playing for the only Kent side in the League was one of the big reasons for coming here.”

“I want to get promoted, I want to be here and want to be successful. I can offer more myself and I always give my best when I play at whatever level I have played at, it really will mean a lot to me if I can get promoted with my “home” town team!”

“I do hear some of the supporters’ comments when you’re on the bench,” Williams confessed, “not necessarily when you step onto the pitch as your full focus is on the game really.”

“You do sometimes hear some nasty bits and bobs, but on the whole, most of it’s positive and when it is, it gives us all a real boost.”

A lot of Gills fans are already looking ahead to the busy month of February which includes the visit of old rivals Swindon Town to Kent, the club of course that Williams came to Priestfield from, and he admitted that he does as well, he told us, “I look at the month in front ahead and what fixtures we have mainly to see when we’re travelling and when we are not.”

“When we’ve back to back games Saturday/Tuesday, Saturday/Tuesday, and yes I have seen Swindon on the list, but our full focus is on this Saturday and the MK Dons and how we can counteract their strengths while focusing on ours.”

“We have some tough games coming up, but that really does not mean much in this League as everyone can beat anyone else!”

“We go into every game thinking that we are going to win, and we want to win, so it does not really affect us.”
