Gillingham head for North Wales and Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground this weekend and the side’s own Welsh international, Jonny Williams, has been talking to KSN and the local press about the return to his “homeland” …
Williams has been capped just under thirty times at youth and under twenty-one level as well as thirty-three full caps for the Welsh and will be making his first return to Wales this weekend since his arrival in the summer.
“I’ve played a lot of games at The Racecourse,” he told us, “As a kid, as a sixteen, seventeen-year-old, in under twenty ones’ teams – it will be nice to go back there as I’ve fond memories of playing there.”
“They have been on a fantastic journey; credit to them for what they have achieved – everyone wants to beat them now, but fair play to them as they keep at it, proving a lot of people wrong and winning a lot of matches.”
“They have a very prolific goalscorer up top as well, but it is a game that excites us and being the manager’s first League game, it will be a spectacle, I’m sure – we’ll take a great following like we did at Swindon as it makes a difference to the players when we’ve got that backing behind us.”
“I have watched the documentaries and have been enjoying it to be fair – it is a good watch!” Williams admitted.
“I don’t remember too much about the Club really – just the pitch and the training pitch – it’s amazing what they have achieved, but we’re looking forward to going there and hopefully putting on a show as it’s a game that we think we can win.”
There is a lot of building work going on at the Racecourse Ground at the moment and Williams as a proud Welshman said, “It’s a club that are having the right go at things and changing a lot of things – it’s an exciting project and likewise, I have say the same about Gillingham – we’re doing things the right way and is a great thing to be a part of with the new owners and the goals that they have for our Football Club and it’s exciting to be here that’s for sure!”
“I hope that what’s going on here is just as exciting – I have joined the Club to be part of that journey and it will be fantastic if we can get promoted and to be a part of that!”
“We want to be entertaining to watch and get the results! It will be amazing if we can replicate what they are doing in North Wales, but we have got our own journey that we want to focus on and do well for the team and the fans and everyone involved.”
