The predicted rain did not arrive until the second half and hardly improved an already poor playing surface.
The conditions scarcely bothered the Addicks, who broke at pace and took their chances, to record consecutive 3-0 wins.
Guy Luzon was forced to make two changes to the team that started against Brentford, Morgan Fox and Yoni Buyens replacing injured duo, Rhoys Wiggins and Johnnie Jackson.
The game was to have a total of fourteen additional minutes played.
Wigan started brightly and penned Charlton back in the early exchanges. Stephen Henderson was forced to make a good early stop to foil Marc Antoine Fortune, and Yoni Buyens stopped Sheyi Ojo illegally to pick up his tenth yellow card of the season. The booking means Buyens will be suspended and unavailable for the Derby game on Tuesday.
Against the run of play, the Addicks went ahead after 17 minutes. A sweeping move down the right saw Tony Watt play the ball into Igor Vetokele, who fed Frederic Bulot. Bulot thundered an unstoppable shot past Ali Al Habsi to open the scoring.
The was a long delay due to a serious neck injury sustained by former Charlton striker, Leon Clarke, following an innocuous looking challenge.
During the ten added minutes at the end of the first half, the Addicks doubled their advantage with another crisp team goal.
Vetokele and Watt again combined to set Bulot free. This time, the winger delivered a delicious cross that enabled Vetokele to somehow get the better of two defenders to head home.
In the second half, Watt went agonisingly close when one-on-one with Al Habsi and a Johann Gudmundsson snap shot was a whisker away.
Stephen Henderson had just one meaningful save to make as Charlton kept the Latics at bay.
Two minutes from time, the visitors completed another 3-0 victory. Gudmundsson was free down the right but unselfishly squared the ball for Chris Eagles to help himself to a debut goal.
It may not have been quite the flowing display seen against Brentford but it was a thoroughly competent and well deserved win.
Temporarily at least, the Addicks are back in the top half of the table.
