Karl Robinson’s depleted troops drew 0-0 with Wigan on a bitterly cold night in Lancashire.
The Addicks richly deserved their point, and fashioned the game’s two best chances for Karlan Ahearne-Grant.
Ahearne-Grant, Johnnie Jackson and Harry Lennon came into the team, wirh Anfernee Dijksteel, Ricky Holmes and Ben Reeves dropping to the bench.
Lennon had to be taken off late on, but by then he had run himself into the ground.
Ahearne-Grant was the lone front man, Magennis slotted in on the left-hand side of the advanced midfield trio.
The game was far from a classic, but for dogged determination and resilience, the Addicks were faultless.
They restricted Wigan to very few clear cut chances. The Latics came closest late in the game, when Ben Amos made a stunning save to foil Wigan skipper, Sam Morsy.
The keeper had to dive full length to tip Morsy’s effort onto the inside of the post.
Ahearne-Grant fired into the side netting in stoppage time at the end of the first-half, and shot narrowly wide after the break. Both efforts were from tight angles.
Every player gave his all. Naby Sarr – operating on the unfamiliar right side of central defence – was immense. Ahearne-Grant chased everything and Jackson rolled back the years.
Robinson was rightfully proud of his players and said this after the game:
”I was very impressed with my players. The fans were excellent today.
“I think everyone knew today that with seven or eight players out of our starting line-up not available (it was a difficult task) coming to a team that have scored sevens and fours against teams, and played very well here on Boxing Day against a team that are also flying in Shrewsbury.
“They were warriors tonight.”
With some easier looking fixtures coming up next month, a host of players returning from injury, and the possibility of some new arrivals, Robinson may look back and feel his team turned the corner on a freezing cold night in Lancashire.
