There was shock early on Friday morning when the news filtered through that regular keeper, Ben Alnwick, had signed a permanent deal with League One side Leyton Orient.Charlton Athletic

Alnwick played twelve games for the Addicks and had made the keeper’s spot his own since Ben Hamer’s injury. With Nick Pope on loan at York, Dillon Phillips will provide the cover at Wigan for Yohann Thuram-Ulien.

Another player to go through the Valley exit door on Friday was Yann Kermorgant. The striker passed his medical at Bournemouth and penned a two-year deal at Dean Court. Negotiations had been taking place with Kermorgant and his representatives and Charlton offered the Frenchman a two-year deal, believed to be on reduced terms.

Another departure, albeit on a temporary basis, was left-back Cedric Evina who has joined Phil Parkinson’s Bradford on loan.

There were rumours of former Leeds winger, Max Gradel, and Standard Liege defensive midfielder, Ibrahim Cisse, joining the club bu,t as yet, nothing has materialised.

One deal that was completed, brought highly rated Polish striker, Piotr Parzyszek, to The Valley. The De Graafschap player signed a four-and-a-half year deal with Charlton.

With Lawrie Wilson suspended for the trip to the DW Stadium, Chris Powell will be without five of the team that he fielded at Doncaster on Tuesday. The side looked jaded, so the manager may decide to rest another player or two.

Yohann Thuran-Ulien is the only option Powell has for the goalkeeping berth. Ben Hamer is still injured and Dillon Phillips is yet to make his league debut.

Wilson’s suspension should open the door for new signing, Loic Nego, to make his first appearance for the Addicks. Michael Morrison will continue at the heart of the defence and Powell will have to choose between Dorian Dervite and Richard Wood to partner him.

Powell is a naturally cautious manager and Wigan will be formidable foes, so he may opt for a solid midfield. Danny Green offers creativity on the right but the manager may continue with his experiment of using Jordan Cousins’ energy on the flank.

Astrit Ajdarevic looks a certain starter and ideally Powell would like to give Johnnie Jackson a breather. However, with the upheaval at the club over the last 48 hours, Powell will need his skipper’s experience and leadership on the pitch.

It is unlikely that Jackson will last the full 90 minutes though. Callum Harriott is another who may miss out this time, with the experience of Andy Hughes possibly being preferred.

Simon Church’s non-stop running is a valuable asset for Powell but the Welshman is another who may be used from the bench.

Marvin Sordell may be given a start with one of the two newcomers as his partner. Piotr Parzyszek has had more recent action and may get the nod over Reza Ghoochannejhad.

Charlton could look like this:

Thuram; Nego, Morrison, Wood, Wiggins; Cousins, Hughes, Jackson, Ajdarevic; Parzyszek, Sordell.

Subs: Phillips, Dervite, Lennon, Green, Hughes, Church, Ghoochannejhad.

The referee will be Mike Bull of Essex.

After the traumatic week experienced by everyone connected with the club, it would be a surprise if the Addicks take anything from the game.
