Who next for Charlton Athletic?
Who next for Charlton Athletic?

Chris Wilder’s late decison not to join Charlton has left the South Londoners looking elsewhere to fill the void.

It seems certain that Wilder was their only target, so they will need to go back to the drawing board.

Dougie Freedman is a name that has been mentioned, but it is unlikely that the Palace legend would consider taking the reins at The Valley.

Freedman has had Lennie Lawrence by his side at Palace, Bolton and Nottingham Forest and Lawrence had discussions with Roland Duchatelet on the owner’s recent visit to London.

If Lawrence is offered a Director of Football type role, he would be the ideal person to mentor Simon Clark. The current first team coach is ambituous and would like to embark on a mnagerial career as soon as possible.

It us unlikely Clark would be considered for the top job unless he had a wise old head like Lawrence to lean on.

Malky Mackay has been ‎linked with the Addicks in the past and the Scot was the subject of speculation before Karel Fraeye arrived.

Mackay was spotted in the directors’ box at The Valley when he was a guest of the Football League, fuelling speculation.

The former Watford and Cardiff boss has been out of work since leaving Wigan in April 2015.

Steve Cotterill led Bristol City to promotion from League One during his three year stint at Ashton Gate. Cheltenham born Cotterill is a vastly experienced manager, and numbers Burnley, Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest amongst the clubs he has managed.

‎Though now 51-years old, Cotterill’s infectious enthusiasm is a real bonus.

Nebojsa Vignjevicis the bookmakers favourite for the job. The 47-year-old Serbian is the current Upjest manager in Hungary, and was close to being offered the Charlton job before Jose Riga arrived for a second stint at The Valley in January. ‎

Vignjevic seems an unlikely choice. The Addicks are determined to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt, and are set to recruit ‎a largely British based squad during the summer.

The Serbian has no playing or managerial experience in England and would be an illogical choice.

Gillingham boss, Justin Edinburgh, and Oxford’s Michael Appleton, are also likely to be considered.

Former Norwich and Blackburn manager, Paul Lambert, Nigel Pearson, Uwe Rosler, Billy Davies, Paul Jewell, and ‎ex-Swansea boss, Gary Monk, are all available and looking for work.

Whether‎ the Addicks choose to head hunt or invite applications remains to be seen, but they will be keen to make an appointment this month.

It is going to be a busy summer in SE7, with a huge turnover of players – both in and out – and the new incumbent of the hot seat will want to fashion his squad before the players report back for pre-season training.

‎The search for the next boss will be the club’s top priority right now.
