The game was played in horrible conditions to begin with as the wind & the rain came down but both sides played good football despite these conditions.
Greenwich came away from the Belmont wondering how they did not pick up at least a point as they dominated the first half but credit to Whitstable as the defended brilliantly & stayed in the game & got stronger as the game wore on.
The first chance of the game came in the 3rd minute when Stephen Smith 25 yards out saw his shot go just wide, four minutes later Teshuane Tyreece-Walters jinked across the 18 yard box before seeing his curling effort go just past the post.
In the 10th minute Greenwich nearly took the lead when Ryan King-Elliott’s cross to the near post was headed goal wards by Laurent Mendy but it just went inches past the post. Boro were enjoying the lion’s share of possession but resolute defending stopped them scoring & in the 22nd minute in a rare attack Jordan Wright on the right wing put Smith through & from an acute angle his shot hit the sidenetting.
In the 32nd minute till half time Boro enjoyed possession & chances, in the 32nd minute King-Elliott on the edge of the area forced Dan Eason to save & 4 minutes later he saved King-Elliott’s shot from 20 yards. In a rare attack for Whitstable McKinley put Wright in & his shot was turned away for a corner & from the resulting corner McKinlay’s header was tipped over the bar by Tom McGill.
In the 42nd minute Phil Brown 25 yards out saw his shot tipped over the bar by Eason & 2 minutes later Mendy’s shot from 15 yards was deflected forcing Eason to tip over the bar. The last chance of the half came in the 2nd minute off added on time when Whitstables Elliott on the left beat the defender & his shot was deflected away for a corner.
The second half took a while to get going & Whitstable had the first chance when a long ball forward found Smith who went into the area & from an acute angle McGill pushed it around the post.
In the next minute Whitstable took an unexpected lead when a corner into the area was half cleared & was knocked back into the 6 yard box where Stuart West 5 yards out twisted & shot home.
It’s funny how goals change games as Greenwich became ragged while Whitstable took control of the game. All of the chances for the rest of the game went Whitstables way, as in the 71st minute a ball forward flicked on found Smith whose shot from 25 yards went wide then six minutes later Kyran Connelly on the right saw his cross into the area find Charlie Smith but from 12 yards his header went past the post.
In the 87th minute Whitstable made sure of the points when Harry Brown’s free kick into the area went all the way through to Smith who from 5 yards side footed in.
The final whistle went & Whitstable continued their recent good run & moved up to sixth in the table.
