Whitehawk v Welling United preview

Two points from three tough games have left Welling United one place outside the play-off zone but with four games remaining there are sufficient points still available for them to extend their season.

However, they may not be able afford another slip-up and must travel to Whitehawk with the intent of returning with all three points.

Winning at the Brighton based club might have appeared to be a foregone conclusion until a few weeks ago but they have picked up some impressive results yesterday and know that a defeat would confirm their relegation in front of their own supporters.

Their defeat at Chelmsford City on Tuesday evening was their first in four games and even in that game they came back from two down before losing 4-2. Incredibly, three of the four goals conceded were penalties.

When Welling entertained Whitehawk in September they made hard work of a one-nil win with Harry Phipps notching the only goal.

Goals have been hard to come by for Welling in the last three games. After scoring seven in two away games at Bognor Regis Town and Hungerford Town, Jamie Philpot’s goal at Hampton and Richmond Borough was their only goal in those matches.

However, they looked the more likely scorers last weekend against Havant and Waterlooville until Adam Coombes went off injured. Havant then went on to score the only goal of the game with their one clear-cut chance.

Coombes missed Tuesday’s goal-less draw with Hemel Hempstead Town but after the game player coach Jack Parkinson suggested that the injury wasn’t as serious as first feared and that he could be back in contention at Whitehawk.

Definitely back in the reckoning will be Jack Jebb who missed the Hemel game to serve a one match ban however Parkinson has one game remaining on his two match suspension.

Last season, when the two teams met on the south coast, it took eighty-two minutes for Whitehawk’s Frankie Sutherland to score the only goal against a lack-lustre Welling team.

Fourteen months later, incredibly, not one of the sixteen players from either squad is still at their respective clubs. However, Welling supporters may remember some players who were in the Whitehawk squad at Chelmsford on Tuesday night.

Zach Fagan had two spells at Park View Road but suffered with injuries. Lloyd Macklin played a few games for the Wings earlier this season and his pace will come as no surprise.

Also in the Hawks squad are Osa Obamwonyi and Tome Adeloye, two more of the sixty five players who have represented their first team this season.
