Some of the UK’s toughest wheelchair sportsmen and women are bringing their talents to Medway.

The wheelchair rugby Coloplast Super Series is being staged at Medway Park on Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 March.

The event will feature around 80 athletes, including GB squad players from the country’s leading clubs, including the local Kent Crusaders, doing battle in two days of brutal competition in a bid to be crowned the first Super Series champions.

Wheelchair rugby is a Paralympic sport and the competition at Medway Park will feature many of the squad who will represent Team GB in the London Games this year.

The sport is played by men and women with upper and lower limb disabilities.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe said: “It is great news that the Wheelchair Rugby series will return to Medway Park as part of our countdown to the London Games and a fantastic year for sport. Medway Park is a superb facility and am sure all the competitors and spectators will enjoy being part of this exciting event here”.

A spokeperson from Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) said: “Wheelchair rugby is one of the fastest growing paralympic sports on the planet; a nail biting, seat gripping, full contact wheelchair sport and it’s coming back to Medway Park. Come down and watch, you can even jump in a chair and have a go yourself.”

The full list of participating teams is: Kent Crusaders, Stoke Mandeville Storm, Cardiff Pirates, North Wales Dragons, North East Bulls, West Coast Crash, East Midland Marauders and the Gaelic Warriors.

Spectator admission to the event will be free and matches will begin from 8.30am on Saturday and 9.00am on Sunday each day.
