Weymouth vs Welling United – Preview

It’s another long trip for Welling United on Saturday when they travel to Weymouth for a Vanarama National League South fixture.

Although there is no need for concern yet, Welling need to start converting good performances into victories to first close the gap and then ease their way away from the bottom four.

Last Saturday they drew nil-nil with Chippenham Town. A combination of an outstanding display by Will Henry, the visitors’ goalkeeper, along with missed chances, meant that Welling were forced to settle for a point for the third consecutive home game.

Their hosts on Saturday have played a match more than Welling and are six points ahead of the Wings. At home they have won two, drawn three, and lost two.

Their last outing was a one all draw at Havant and Waterlooville. An eighth minute own goal presented them with a lead but a Havant equaliser midway through the first half completed the scoring.

Danny Bloor, the Welling manager, was able to give some of his squad players a run out on Monday evening in a London Senior Cup game at New Salamis.

Incredibly, the Wings were awarded three penalties for fouls on Enoch Muwonge, and it might have been four. After the first one was saved, Muwonge took the responsibility himself and converted the other two to overturn a one goal deficit.

Number one goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom is expected to be fit to return in Dorset but James Vaughan may have to pass a fitness test if he is to feature.

Last season, Welling visited Weymouth twice, first in the FA Cup and then in the National League South. Both games ended in victories for the Terras, three-nil in the cup, and two-one in the league. They also won at Park View Road.

However, it’s a different Welling team under a different manager now, so if Welling are at their best they will feel confident of reversing those results.
