This Saturday Welling United take a break from National League South action when they visit Weymouth in an F.A. Cup Third Qualifying Round tie.
After an unbeaten six match September, they start the new month in fifth place in the league and hoping for an extended F.A. Cup run.
It took them two matches to see off Southern Counties East Football League Fisher in the Second Qualifying Round, being held nil-nil at home before winning three-nil in the replay. Taylor Maloney, Taofiq Olomowewe and Amadou Kassarate were on the scoresheet that night.
For Weymouth, it has been a difficult season so far. They were relegated from the National League last season and they have only claimed two points this term from draws at home to Hemel Hempstead Town, and away to Hungerford Town.
The one victory that they have enjoyed this season was in the last round of the F.A. Cup when they defeated Winchester City three-one on the road.
Despite their difficulties in the league, Welling manager Warren Feeney will not underestimate the Terras. Bobby Wilkinson was installed as manager two weeks ago, and he has had success in the National League South in the past.
Feeney said “No disrespect to them, but Weymouth are going to look at where we are at the moment and think ‘we want a scalp’. The pressure is on us to go and win but it’s a game that we can win. It’s a great competition, the F.A. Cup.
“I was lucky to get to the final with one of my clubs, and as I said to the boys, I don’t like these people at the top level who disrespect the F.A. Cup by looking to rest players. I know there’s a lot of games at the top level, but what a cup. We’ve already gone past where we lost last year and we certainly want to get into the next round and be one away from one of the big teams.”
