Two National League South draw specialists met when Weymouth hosted Welling United so it was no great surprise that the spoils were shared.
After Welling had failed to make anything of four early corners, Dan Roberts had an effort for the hosts that took a deflection beyond the post. Antony Papadopoulos had Welling’s first serious effort when he cut in and let fly but he couldn’t keep it down. Papadopoulos then became creator with a cross that Amadou Kassarate tried to glance home but he didn’t get enough on it and it went beyond the far post.
It looked as though the first half was going to meander to an uneventful end however, that changed on the stroke of half time. A miscommunication between Ben Winterbottom and Jack Burchell resulted in them both going down and Ben Thomson took full advantage when he rolled it into the empty net. To make matters worse, Burchell was unable to continue and was replaced by Taylor Curran.
After the interval Weymouth’s Keelan O’Connell had a shot deflected wide, although it would probably have missed the target anyway, before Roberts broke down the right and hit a low drive that Winterbottom held comfortably. At the other end Papadopoulos delivered a corner that Lachlan Byrd headed back into the middle. Weymouth struggled to clear it and it came out to Papadopoulos whose twenty-yarder whistled beyond the far post.
Soon after Welling equalised. Kain Adom found space and took advantage with a clean strike from twenty yards that flew into the bottom corner. Welling might then have gone ahead when Jephte Tanga fired towards the bottom corner but Jared Thompson stuck his left leg out and diverted it past the post.
Adom tried his luck again but could not keep his shot down after cutting in then Tristan Abrahams made a chance out of nothing but fired over.
In a rare foray Thomson hit a shot on target that Winterbottom held at the second time but Welling were soon back on the attack again, and Cameron Green struck a free kick just beyond the far post.
Moe Shubbar shot wide of the near post for the Terra’s before Thompson made a full length save to keep out Dominic Odusanya’s free kick.
Substitute Enoch Muwonge shot just wide for the Wings after making the chance for himself but Weymouth might have nicked it at the end when Calvin Brooks met a corner barely challenged, but sent his firm header over the bar.
Danny Bloor, Welling’s manager, will be looking to turn possession into a win on Tuesday evening when visiting Dover Athletic.
