Weston-super-Mare vs Welling United – Preview

On Saturday, Welling United take another trip to the West Country when they play Weston-super-Mare in a Vanarama National League South match.

Although Welling manager Rod Stringer was not overly concerned about his teams performances in their three defeats in eight days, he accepted that something had to change and suggested after their defeat at home to Boreham Wood, that there would probably be new players coming in.

True to his word, three signings were announced on Wednesday. Experienced striker James Alabi should give the team a focal point. He has played for several Football League games before moving to Bromley where he made over eighty appearances and was heavily involved in their F.A. Trophy winning run. He has also played for Dover Athletic and Maidstone United. Two other signings, both on loan from Eastbourne Borough for the rest of the season, are winger Jayden Davis and centre back Daniel Quick.

While Welling were losing one-nil at home to Boreham Wood on Saturday, Weston were recording their first victory since November with an excellent win at Dorking Wanderers. Former Bromley and Dartford dead ball expert, Luke Coulson, put the Seagulls ahead five minutes into the second half and Pedro Borges added a second with fourteen minutes remaining. Although Dorking pulled one back in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Sam Pearson made the points safe two minutes later.

It will be the return game between Welling and Weston this season as they met at Park View Road in October. Anointed Chukwu put the Wings ahead in the second minute and it was slightly against the run of play when Reuben Reid levelled ten minutes before half time. Four minutes later, Coulson put the visitors ahead and when he scored again in the second half, the result was assured.

At home, the Seagulls have won five, drawn five and lost three. Welling have a decent record at Weston, having won three of their last four matches there. However, they were beaten four-two last season with Reid twice on target, supported by an own goal and a close range strike by James Morton. Welling’s goals were scored by Tristan Abrahams and Josh Chambers.

All three of the new Wings will be keen to make an early impression, and help the team to climb away from the drop zone.
