Woodspring Stadium was the venue of a match that both management teams believed they should have won.
Whilst Welling were the better team for the first seventy minutes, and twice lead, Weston-super-Mare came back twice and would have won had it not been for Chris Lewington.
Although not at their best, Welling might have been three up at the break but had just the one goal from Adam Coombes to show for it.
Tom Richards, on debut, was first to try his luck for the Wings but his shot flew wide.
Lloyd Humphries fired wide from the edge of the box for Weston before a Matt Fish shot hit a defender and looped over the bar at the other end.
Coombes header was off target from Dan Walker’s cross before Welling had a shout for a penalty when Danny Waldren appeared to be bundled to the ground.
Walker then cut in and fired low towards the bottom corner but Luke Purnell got down well to save.
Ashley Kington and Jacob Cane were off target for Weston before Coombes came close with a drive across the face of goal after feeding on Walker’s header down.
As half time approached, Walker missed a great opportunity when meeting a Richards cross at the far post but his volley missed the target.
Well into injury time, Coombes feasted onto a poor header back and smashed home from the edge of the area for his 34th goal of the season.
Immediately after the break, Coombes again tried his luck but Purnell made a good diving save.
Having given away a needless corner, Welling failed to defend it properly and Sam Hatton conceded a free kick on the edge of the area. Dayle Grubb stepped up and gave Lewington no chance with his shot over the wall.
Within a minute, Waldren had fired Welling but again, they were unable to defeat their lead.
Grubb was off target with one effort, but equalised with just Weston’s second shot on target when firing home from the edge of the box.
After that, the Seagulls looked the more likely winners and Lewington was called upon to make saves from Bradley Ash, Jake Lee and Grubb.
It wasn’t total one way traffic though, and Purnell made a good save from Coombes but Weston had the last chance in mystery time after injury time had passed. It fell to Ash but he fired high and wide.
