Weston-super-mare 0-2 Welling United

Despite being forced to make three changes, Welling United continued their impressive form with a professional victory at Weston-super-Mare.

An injury to Jamie Coyle and the absence of both Tom Bradbrook and Christian Nanetti meant that Ian Gayle, Eli Phipps and Christie Pattisson were drafted into the first team.

Jack Parkinson had Welling’s first chance when his header from Jack Jebb’s corner was headed away from under the bar.

Kleton Perntreou made an easy save from a deflected Tristan Plummer shot then Dayle Grubb attempted one of his trade mark cut ins and shot but fired over from twenty yards.

On seventeen minutes, Welling went ahead. Connor Dymond won a tackle in midfield that sent Phipps away. Keen to make the most of his extended loan, he fired beyond Luke Purnell from twenty yards.

Again, Grubb tried his luck but a deflection took his effort wide then Danny Greenslade also fired an effort off target

Just after the half hour mark, Welling scored again. Jeffrey Monakana put over a brilliant cross that Joe Healy was delighted to head home at the far post.

Former Wing Jake Reid came close to reducing the arrears when his header flew out off the post however that was as close as the Seagulls came.

Perntreou made comfortable saves from Gethyn Hill and Plummer before Christie Pattisson shot home for Welling.

Neither teams made changes at the break and Grubb again tried his cut in and shot trick but Connor Dymond read it and made a good block.

Purnell was then made busy, first when charging out to block Healy’s attempted lob after he had intercepted a poor headed back pass.

Healy was then thwarted by a brilliant save before he headed wide from Pattisson’s cross with Purnell struggling.

Monakana was the next to be foiled by a good Purnell save as Welling looked to add the killer third goal but it did not come.

However, it mattered little as stout Welling defending kept Weston chances to a premium.

Grubb fired wide before Welling came close again. An over-hit Sutton corner was controlled well by Healy and he sent Bradley Goldberg away down the left wing. He held it up well before playing Phipps away and his shot flew over with Purnell struggling.

As time elapsed, Weston had a number of corners that came to nothing before the final whistle blew and the Welling players celebrated.

That extended Welling’s run to five consecutive league wins, four of which were clean sheets, and seven in the league unbeaten.
