The Vanarama Conference South form table had suggested prior to this match that there could only be one winner with the high flying ravens visiting the rock bottom seagulls.
Although the result was to meet the expected outcome, Bromley left Woodspring stadium knowing they had been in a tough game.
The opening fifteen minutes of the match were very much a case of the hosts taking the game to Bromley and twice fashioned long range efforts that came close to breaking the deadlock. Firstly Dayle Grubb tested Seb Brown with a swerving shot from twenty yards out that Brown had to be at his best to keep out. Another good Weston move led by Joe McClennan then created an opportunity for Jacob Cane but he shot high and wide when well set from 18 yards out.
Rather against the run of play, it was Bromley who took the lead. Good strength by Reece Prestedge saw him beat the defender and cross for Damien Scannell who finished with a neat toe poke across the keeper, while under pressure from two Weston defenders.
With a goal to the good, Bromley then proceeded to turn the screw on their opponents. Excellent wing play from Scannell set up Moses Ademola but he could only fire his header into the crowd and not on target. Six minutes later, Ademola did better from further out, forcing a fantastic save from Luke Purnell with a firmly struck drive from 25 yards out.
The rest of the first half played out to little incident with Bromley looking comfortable with their lead but unable to fashion any clear cut chances to further stretch the lead.
The second half saw Weston dominate possession but Bromley create the more clear cut chances. Weston’s best opportunity was in fact the opening chance of the half. An audacious lob from 35 yards out by Cane looked to be heading into the net but a last ditch fingertip by Brown pushed the ball wide with many in the ground unsure of how the ball hadn’t gone in.
Happy to concede possession to their hosts, Bromley did not threaten the Weston goal until midway through the second half with Purnell saving comfortable from a Danny Waldren header from a corner. Weston where to create the next opportunity with the lively Grubb shooting narrowly wide from the angle of the 18 yard box.
With the game now resembling a nip and tuck affair, Bromley promptly went down the pitch and good link up play between Ademola and Jamie Slabber led to the latter stinging Purnell’s hands.
Danny Waldren was to be the next to test Purnell’s ability with two free kicks ten minutes apart, the latter free kick in particular drawing a magnificent fingertip save from the young Weston custodian. Waldren was to be denied once more when he had his shot blocked on the line following a Dennis corner.
It looked like Bromley would rue that missed opportunity when a cross-cum shot from McClennan cannoned off the crossbar but fortunately for the ravens the effort rebounded to safety.
As the game entered injury time Weston fashioned one more chance, as Bromley failed to clear their lines, Bradley Ash broke through only to see his shot blocked by Brown with the follow up opportunity dispatched into the side netting. Bromley could have put the game to rest minutes later when excellent play from Prestedge played in Slabber who crossed for Ademola, only for Ademola to place his header wide with the goal gaping.
As it was Bromley did not need a second goal as the referee blew his final whistle shortly afterwards to consign Weston to eight league defeats in a row. Meanwhile Mark Goldberg will be happy to see his Bromley side gain another three points towards their promotion quest.
