Wells return to league in style
Wells return to league in style

There was a message on the Tunbridge Wells dressing room wall on Monday; “It starts here! If you want these people coming back and the League title, it all starts now. Sun’s out – enjoy it!”TW5

And goodness they did enjoy themselves too as just 48 hours after their heroic defeat to Spennymoor Town in the FA Vase Final under the Wembley Arch, Tunbridge Wells returned to the bread and butter of the Kent League.

And given the incredible weekend that the club enjoyed, even the staunchest Wells fan would have forgiven their heroes suffering with a Wembley hangover.

But what they got was the exact opposite as Martin Larkin’s side turned on the style and then some in front of the Culvenden’s biggest League gate of the season as Canterbury City were on the end of all Wells’ Wembley frustrations.

Two goals a piece from Jack Harris and Andy Irvine, a low drive from Joe Fuller, and a stunner from Wembley goal scorer Josh Stanford secured Wells the points against a Canterbury side still reeling from Simon Austin’s departure as manager after their last game (ironically a 3-1 home defeat against the Wells ten days ago).

Indeed the City side was unrecognisable from that day with only two of the starting line up lining up at the Culvenden!

Harris put the Wells ahead after 21 minutes drilling home from the edge of the box after Tom Davey’s charging run before Irvine finished off a swift break from Joe Fuller and Jon Pilbeam seven minutes later. The only real surprise was that Wells were “only” two goals to the good at the break such was there near total dominance.

Irvine headed number three eight minutes after half time courtesy of the goal of the game. Keelan Mooney, then Harris, then Mooney again, then Fuller to feed skipper Jason Bourne, who’s first time cross was powerfully headed home at the back post.

Chance then followed chance as red wave followed red wave as Wells turned it on for their fans who were basking in glorious Holiday Monday sunshine.

The dam was finally burst 15 minutes from time when Wembley scoring hero Stanford tip toed into the box and curled a beauty beyond poor Alfie Terry in the City goal who must have felt that he was in a shooting gallery.

And the poor keeper’s day was really made on 79 minutes when Fuller scored from 25 yards with a daisy cutter that went straight through the keeper. Harris completed the scoring three minutes from time racing clear from 40 yards before drilling home.

They didn’t win any trophies for this stunning performance but the one thing that Martin Larkin’s side did was to lay down one heck of a marker to the rest of the Kent League for 2013/2014!
