Welling’s Goldberg “delighted” following Hungerford win

Dominant Welling United were good value for their victory at Hungerford Town.

After the game, manager Mark Goldberg was jubilant with the performance. “[I’m] delighted to get our first win away in the league and it was a really crucial game for us because we’d been playing well and starting to put some performances together in the league and not getting the results

“It’s nice to come away and two-nil would have been a fairer result than two-one. It was a little bit shaky at the end but we got the result we wanted.”

On a couple of occasions this season, Welling have dropped points when conceding late goals so when Hungerford pulled one back in injury time, Goldberg was slightly concerned. He said “The way things have been going for us this season, you kind of thought a minute and a half was too long.

“The reality of that was that we deserved to have at least a two-nil margin, I believe, but they did look dangerous on the break and they started exposing us on the right hand side. Cookie (Anthony Cook) was getting forward a lot and poor Connor (Dymond) was left on his own.

“We just thought in the last twenty minutes we ought to get some extra legs in there and we took Brad (Goldberg) off and brought Jebbie (Jack Jebb) on and it allowed young Theo (Widdrington) to support a little bit more when Cookie goes on those explosive runs and he got the goal so you can’t complain.”

Goldberg was particularly happy with the two well constructed goals. He continued “Very well taken, and good team goals as well. I thought Coombsie (Adam Coombes) was excellent today, His hold up play, mainly, was very good. His good movement and link up with Brad is starting to come together. Brad had a couple of shots that tested the keeper so all in all we looked more of a threat going forward than we have done in recent league games.

“Coombsie and Danny Waldren, it’s hard to say who was man of the match and they both played superbly well and deserved the accolades they got at the end of the match.”

The timing of the goals was important too, as Goldberg explained. “The goals came at a good time for us. We needed them. A goal just before the half settled the nerves a bit because we’d done quite well kicking up-hill and it’s great to come in at half time one-nil.

“Then we scored our second goal at a good time as well. It’s just silly that we conceded the way that we did at the end with a mistake like that but it won’t spoil a good result and a good win away from home.”

There was one negative from the game and that was in the form of an injury as Goldberg explained “Unfortunately, Gavin McCallum has a slight tear of a hamstring which is a problem for us. Julien Anau has gone back out on loan again. He could have been cover for us.

Nathan Green has come back fit and it’s good to see Jebbie fit and we will have to assess where we are for next week which is a big cup game. We certainly won’t be underestimating them (Tavistock AFC).
