Welling U v Tonbridge Angels Preview

Tuesday night’s Kent derby between Welling United and Tonbridge Angels features two clubs in need of the points for very different reasons.Welling United

Following Saturday’s home draw with Basingstoke Town, Welling’s lead at the top of the Blue Square Bet South was only maintained due to their superior goal difference over second placed Salisbury City. The Wings have played three fewer matches, however, and will be keen to take full advantage of the first of their three games in hand.

At the other end of the table, Tonbridge are just two points clear of the relegation zone and need victories to get clear daylight between them and the bottom three. They did not play on Saturday as heavy rain on the previous day caused the pitch at Chelmsford to be waterlogged.

Both teams have newcomers who may make full debuts in the game. Former Ebbsfleet United midfielder Giannoulis Fakinos played the last fifteen minutes for Welling on Saturday and they have also added Jake Reid on loan from Telford.

Tonbridge AngelsMeanwhile, Tonbridge have signed defender Anthony Furlonge on a one month loan from Stevenage Borough and striker Ashley Miller for a month from Gillingham.

Former Angels, Scott Kinch and Jon Main are in the Welling first team squad whilst ex-Wings Ben Davisson and Mark Lovell are now at Tonbridge.

In the first meeting between the clubs, the points were shared when the Angels’ prolific Frannie Collin converted a penalty to cancel out Harry Baker’s opener.

This will be the third attempt to get this game played following two earlier postponements. Under 12’s, accompanied by an adult, are able to gain free admittance to a match that promises to be an enthralling encounter.
