Following a weekend of F.A. Cup fever, Welling United return to Skrill Premier action with an enticing encounter with Lincoln City.
Whilst Welling were not at their best against a Brislington team who had nothing to lose in front of their biggest ever gate, captain Lee Clarke was in the right place to notch the only goal of the game and earn his team a home draw against Luton Town in the first round.
Before that, though, comes the visit of the Imps who have ambitions of making a speedy return to the football league and will provide another stern challenge to the Wings.
Jamie Day, Welling’s manager, has made it clear that finishing as high as possible in the league is his priority and he will not allow the cup to be a distraction to his players.
Almost for the first time this season, there will be competition in nearly every position as players return from injury. Baily Cargill, hoping to play his final game before returning to AFC Bournemouth, will be competing with Doug Bergqvist, back from injury, Fraser Franks and Blaine Hudson for one of the two starting places at centre back.
Alex Dyer should also be back to challenge for a midfield berth and it is hoped that leading goalscorer, Ross Lafayette, will be back in the first eleven following a four match absence.
Whist Welling have lost just two of their last nine league games, a 3-0 win over Hyde has Lincoln’s only win in the last seven games and their only away win so far this season was a 2-1 win at Dartford.
Despite all this, Lincoln are only three points behind Welling and, following a draw at Worcester City on Saturday, they were in action again in the replay on Tuesday night.
Ben Tomlinson leads their scoring charts with five league goals in sixteen matches whilst defender Sean Newton is top of the ‘assists’ for the Imps. Tomlinson added a brace to his season’s tally with two goals in his team’s three-nil F.A. Cup replay win against Worcester City on Tuesday night.
Their average away support is around the 350 mark so Day will be hoping the Welling supporters are in good voice to give the ground the atmosphere his team enjoys.
