Welling United’s point at Alfreton on Saturday guaranteed them safety and they will be looking for a solid finish with the aim of a top half placing.
Hereford United, who visit, Park View Road on Tuesday night are in a far less comfortable position just one point above the relegation zone and desperate for a win. The dark cloud of financial difficulties adds to the pressure.
Back in August, Welling came second best at Edgar Street. After a goal-less first half , Chris Sharp put the hosts ahead early in the second period. The Wings were still in touch until six minutes remained when Michael Rankin added a second. Ross Lafayette’s response was too little too late.
Things have moved on since then, and with Welling’s illness and injury situation now improving, they will go into the reverse game full of confidence that they can re-dress the balance.
Their point at Alfreton on Saturday was testament to that. The Reds had out-muscled them at Park View Road but Welling were full value for their point in Derbyshire.
Jack Obersteller and Tom Bender both returned from their illnesses so Jamie Day was able to allow Barney Williams to return to VCD Athletic and help them beat their nearest challengers Witham Town to send the Vickers five points clear at the top of the Ryman Premier.
Day selected himself and showed his dead ball quality with a second minute corner that demanded a finish. Quade Taylor obliged with his first Welling goal.
Now that safety is guaranteed, Day may take the opportunity of giving some of his players out on dual registration the opportunity to taste Skrill Premier football. Both Williams and Malik Ouani have made the most of their opportunities and others, such as Coskun Ekim, will be keen to show their credentials.
Three points would take Welling beyond the 60 point mark with sufficient games to push on to a top half finish.
