After picking up good results at Gateshead and Lincoln City, Welling United crashed to a heavy defeat at Barnet.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

They survived a couple of early scares but were swamped in a one sided first half that saw the league leaders go in 3-0 at the break.

Although the Wings improved in the second period, Barnet still managed to score twice more and ran out 5-0 winners.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the Wings suffered yet another dismissal when Chris Bush was shown a red card for conceding a first half penalty. As a result, they will continue to be one squad member short through suspension.

On Saturday, they entertain promotion chasing Grimsby Town. As well as not being able to select Bush, injuries rule out player manager Loui Fazakerley and influential defender Jamal Fyfield.

Looking towards the game, Fazakerley said “Our home form has always been pretty good. It’s nice to have some home games coming up and we need to pick up some wins. We’ve got enough ability and quality to pull the results out and get us up the table.” He will be delighted that Joe Healy will be available again following his three game ban.

Victory at Dover Athletic on Tuesday took the Mariners to within three points of Barnet and they have strengthened their squad with the loan signing of Jordan Chapell on loan from Torquay United.

Fazakerley has also added to his charges and has excited the Welling supporters by bringing Ross Lafayette back from Luton Town on loan for the rest of the season. Kingstonians claim that Charlie Penny has returned to Park View Road after two months on loan there.

Jason Williams has gone back to Southend United but pacey striker Tashan Adeyinka has come in from Maidenhead United. Fazakerley has also brought in defensive cover with Harry Osbourne starting his second spell on loan from Charlton Athletic.

When the two clubs met at Blundell Park earlier in the season, Grimsby enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win. Jon Paul-Pittman put the Mariners ahead six minutes before the break and Ross Hannah converted a penalty on 71 minutes.

However, when the two sides last met at Park View Road, a late Lafayette goal ensured the Wings claimed all three points in a 1-0 victory. It was a big result for Welling as it was their first win following promotion from the Conference South but a repeat of that feat may be even more important.
