Following back to back wins, Welling United will be looking to extend their streak when they entertain F.C Halifax Town on Saturday.
The Shaymen have not the best of starts to the season, and their poor start, just seven points from twelve games, has resulted in Neil Aspin being relieved of his managerial role (five from ten when he departed). Gareth McClelland is at the helm as caretaker manager while the clubs’ board considers the future.
Their five away matches have all ended in defeat, 3-1 at Boreham Wood, 1-0 at Tranmere Rovers, 3-1 at Wrexham, 3-2 at Aldershot Town and 2-1 at Guiseley.
It should be remembered, however, that Welling had lost five in a row on the road before their stunning win that knocked Gateshead off second place last weekend and they will have to work every bit as hard again this weekend.
Whilst a change of manager may bring about changes to formation and style, Welling manager Loui Fazakerley was more concerned on working a game plan based on his team’s strengths. “We can’t worry about them too much. You look at their situation and it could go either way. The mood can’t be too positive at the moment there so the main thing is that we start on the front foot and we take the game to them.”
Tashan Adeyinka, Zac Fagan, Harry Osborne and Barney Williams should all be available after illness, injury and suspension but it would be harsh on any of the eleven who started the last two games to be left out if fully fit.
In the corresponding fixture last season, the rough treatment given to Harry Beautyman was so bad that the national papers followed up on it. Some of the tackles would have looked nasty in the 1970s when almost anything went.
Aristide Bassele put Welling ahead three minutes before the break but Lois Maynard equalised in first half injury time. Five minutes into the second period, Charlie Penny restored the Wings’ lead before Matty Pearson was sent off for one x-rated challenge too many on Beautyman.
