Blue Square Bet South league leaders, Welling United, open their Easter programme by hosting fourth placed Chelmsford City in the league’s outstanding fixture on Good Friday.
Whilst Welling will hope to extend their lead at the top of the table, Chelmsford will be looking to cement their place in the play-offs.
Earlier in the season, the game between the two teams at the Clarets’ Melbourne Stadium included a stunning goal by Ross Lafayette. Earlier, the Wings had looked in control and it was a little against the run of play when Craig Calver put the hosts ahead.
Lafayette’s piece de resistance restored parity and when he headed against the bar soon after Luis Cumbers was on hand to bundle home the loose ball. Sadly that was to prove to be his only goal of the season as injury in the next game meant his 2012-13 campaign would end in just the third game.
In the second half, Welling added a third when Mark Haines turned Fraser Franks’ header into his own net. A late goal by Craig Parker gave the Wings a nervy end to the game, especially as Chelmsford had a goal disallowed in injury time, but Welling held on for a deserved win.
Last season’s meeting between the two teams saw Max Cornhill put Chelmsford ahead before Loick Pires equalised for United. The dismissal of Welling manager Jamie Day meant that his team had to curb some of their attacking instincts and neither team was too disappointed when the game ended with the spoils shared.
It promises to be another exciting encounter with a good attendance on Friday although those travelling by public transport should give themselves extra time due to the engineering works on the Bexleyheath train line over the Easter weekend. Anyone arriving early can take advantage of Happy Hour in the supporters bar between 13:30 and 14:30 with real ale and Wings lager on sale at £2.50 a pint.
