Following two very different but excellent performances, Welling United have another exciting challenge when hosting third placed Alfreton Town.
Last Saturday, Welling trounced Woking 3-0 in the most one sided match at Park View Road this season. Joe Healy’s brace and Lee Clarke scored the goals that enabled the Wings to claim their first double of the season.
At Gateshead on Tuesday, they had to defend well to hold off a rampant Gateshead team after taking an early lead. Healy continued his good goalscoring form when heading home Ross Lafayette’s goal in the tenth minute.
The Heed worked their way back into the game and pulverised Welling’s goal in the last twenty five minutes of the first half, and it took some great saves from Lee Butcher, brave defending, and one strike off the woodwork to keep the Wings ahead. Early in the second half, the hosts equalised courtesy of a highly contentious penalty and their supporters expected them to go on and claim the win.
Jamie Day made the decision to take off attack minded Kurtis Guthrie and replace him with Loui Fazakerley and Welling shut down the supply down the left. Jake Gallagher’s return from injury at half time was also a welcome sight for the Wings supporters who made the long journey, and Welling weren’t troubled unduly again.
Sadly, Welling had to say farewell to Baily Cargill at the end of the match as his loan spell expired and he has now returned to AFC Bournemouth. Day has been attempting to sign reinforcements and still hopes he may be able to unveil an addition to the squad in time to feature on Saturday.
Alfreton have supplemented their squad by bringing in Shaun Harrad following his release from Bury. He is yet to make his debut as his team have not played since crashing 4-1 at Lincoln two Saturdays ago. Their away record is five wins, no draws and eleven defeats and they will be keen to improve upon that as they look to cement their place in the play-off zone.
