Fresh from a solid victory at Hyde on Saturday, Welling United entertain Aldershot on Tuesday night looking for another exciting midweek encounter.
Evening matches can be pretty special at Park View Road and last week’s five two victory over Forest Green Rovers was one of the memorable ones.
Although the visitors are in the bottom four, the position does not reflect their quality of football this season. The handicap of a ten point penalty for financial irregularities is not of the team’s making and had they started on level points they would be in fifth place in the Skrill Premier at present.
On Saturday, they beat Wrexham 2-0, and reports suggest that it was a comfortable victory. The fact that the team was assembled during the fortnight leading to the start of the season makes what they have achieved thus far all that more incredible.
Despite picking up constant injuries, Doug Bergqvist being the latest, Welling have continued in their impressive attempts to establish themselves in the league. Bergqvist will be sorry to miss out on the game with Aldershot for whom he made seven first team appearances.
At Hyde, Bergqvist was replaced by Blaine Hudson, returning from his own injury lay-off, and the on-loan defender was a strong contender for man of the match. Welling showed great defensive ability and goalkeeper Lee Butcher wasn’t called upon to make a real save until the closing minutes, and record his third clean sheet of the season.
Joe Healy scored the only goal of the game from Jake Gallagher’s cross, his second of the season. He is one of eight different Welling players to have notched in the ten league games played with Ross Lafayette leading the way on five.
Hopefully, there will be the good turnout that Welling’s performances have deserved on Tuesday evening for what promises to be an enthralling match up.
