Whilst games fell foul of the weather all over the country, Welling United’s second string side was able to take full advantage of their 3G pitch to progress in the Suburban League Cup.
Visitors Northwood gave a good account of themselves and the win for Welling wasn’t as comfortable as a 3-0 score-line might suggest.
Northwood almost caught Welling out early on when, feasting on a poor clearance, Calvin Moses rounded Josh Hannington but Emman Nwanze got back well to clear off the line. Nwanze was then in action at the other end when heading a Joey Taylor corner wide.
Right back, Wes Baptiste, enjoyed getting forward and a deep cross of his was headed wide by an unmarked Josh Patrick.
Davidson Tejaiye had a shot deflected wide, then Alex Conning’s powerful drive was kept out by a
spectacular save from Dira Ejibe. When the ball came back, Patrick again headed wide.
Patrick then turned right wing provider and his deep cross was headed wide by Alex McKenzie.
Moses came close again for Northwood at the start of the second half when his shot flew back off the angle of post and crossbar. Hannington then made a great save to thwart Josh Lambe.
Ejibe made an even better save when Dan Okah played a return pass with Patrick before launching a shot destined for the bottom corner before the Northwood custodian got down well to turn it away for a corner.
His relief was short lived, however, as Taylor’s corner was met by George Horne who side footed firmly home.
Four minutes later, Welling gave themselves some breathing space when substitute Stefan Kempton put McKenzie through and he finished powerfully.
Hannington was called into action again when turning over a long distance shot spectacularly, and the framework of their goal was again clattered during an almighty goalmouth scramble shortly afterwards.
The gloss was put on Welling’s performance when Patrick burst through and finished confidently.
