On Tuesday night, Welling United got their points tally off the mark with a point at East Thurrock United.
Normally a draw away isn’t a bad result but losing the full three to a very poor refereeing decision with eight minutes remaining made it feel like a defeat.
So bad was the award of the penalty, when the Rocks player tripped over his own feet, that the Wings TV video has found its way to a website in Brazil.
Mark Goldberg, Welling’s manager, has said in the past that he believes things even themselves out but he will hope that the team’s luck turns soon.
Their cause wasn’t helped by losing two players, Pierre Joseph-Dubois then Jordon Brown to injury during the match. Oliver Sprague and Warren Whitely both missed the trip through freak injuries sustained in the pre-match warm up on Saturday so Goldberg will be sweating over player availability for the game with St. Albans City at Park View Road this Saturday.
St. Albans have had a solid start to the campaign with two wins, a draw and one defeat. They are 100% at home with a 2-0 victory over Concord Rangers and a 2-1 win against Chelmsford City.
Away from home, they have not been as successful. They drew 2-2 at Wealdstone before going down to a heavy 3-0 defeat at Bath City last Saturday.
Two former Wings are in the Saints’ squad and will expect to start. Ben Martin was part of Welling’s Conference South winning squad three and a half years ago. Tom Bender had a short spell with the Wings in their first season following promotion, and has also played for Dartford.
Still pointless at home, the Wings will be hoping that their luck changes and that they can claim a victory on Saturday.
