Having won a hard earned point at Truro City on Saturday, Welling United return home with an August Bank Holiday Monday fixture against Chelmsford City.
Their performance in Cornwall was the best of the season so far despite travel difficulties causing late arrival.
They could have folded when going behind but deserved their equaliser when Harry Crawford netted from close range. The point was not without a cost though, and further injuries will cause another team re-shuffle for the game against Chelmsford.
Mark Goldberg, Welling’s manager, admitted that the injuries being suffered don’t make life any easier. “We lost Sam Hatton who unfortunately took a knee injury. We don’t know how long that’s going to be but Harry Crawford stepped into that role and, you know, he has played centre midfield. I actually have spoken to him about it recently, didn’t think I’d be throwing him in that quickly, but I thought he was excellent when he came on.
“I’m a little bit worried about Sean Francis come off, took a helluva knock in the opposition penalty area. Looks like bone bruising. Hopefully it’s no worse than that. I am a bit worried about injuries, I’ve got to say.”
There’s no further news about when George Allen will be available and if Francis is unavailable, Julian Banton may be given a start. Goldberg added “Dean Leacock will be another two or three weeks so he is a bit of a worry.”
Two players are expected to be back in contention. Jamie Slabber and Warren Whitely should have shaken off their injuries but may have to await their opportunity.
Monday’s visitors, Chelmsford City, lie 13th in the table but are yet to win away. At home they have won two and drawn one. However, on their travels they have picked up one point in their three matches. They started with a 2-2 draw at Truro before being beaten 2-1 at St. Albans City and 1-0 at Maidenhead United.
One former Wing, Chris Bush, is on Chelmsford’s books. He hit the woodwork in their 2-0 victory over Oxford City on Saturday but was substituted with 12 minutes remaining.
Welling are trying to generate a carnival atmosphere with a fun day that includes a bouncy castle and face painting for the youngsters plus a beer tent, ice cream van and popcorn. There will be football related games on the pitch before the game and at half time and an end of bank holiday weekend party after the game with the bar remaining open until late.
Should the Wings claim the three points, it would round off the weekend perfectly.
