Welling United vs Chatham Town – Preview

On Saturday, step two sides join the clubs who have qualified for the F.A, second qualifying round, and the draw has thrown up an interesting tie when Welling United entertain Chatham Town.

Last Saturday, the Wings bounced back from three games without a win to beat full time Torquay United.

Both goalkeepers made excellent saves including a wonder reaction save from Welling’s Rhys Lovett before the hosts broke the deadlock with seven minutes remaining.

A sweeping passing move stretched Torquay and Charlie Pegrum completed it with a full debut goal. Gene Kennedy added a second with a clever finish in stoppage time.

Meanwhile the Isthmian League Premier Chats were held to a two all draw by Hendon. They were two up at half time through goals by former Wing Rowan Liburd and Freddie Sears.

However, they were pegged back in the second period. The match finished as a nine men versus ten when three red cards were brandished including Chatham’s Brad Sach and Sid Nelson.

In the First Qualifying round they won two-nil at Westfield. Bailey Akehurst put them ahead five minutes into the second half and former West Ham United player Sears added a second on the hour mark.

Both clubs have players on loan, Welling’s Pegrum from Leyton Orient, and Chatham’s Maxwell Statham from Hemel Hempstead Town, and will require the go ahead from the parent clubs to allow them to play.

At home, Welling have only been beaten once since Rod Stringer took over as manager in January. This season, away from home, Chatham have beaten Bowers and Pitsea between defeats at Lewes and Dartford.

However, in an F.A. Cup tie, the form guide can be disregarded, as has been been seen so many times, so this match could easily go either way.
