It promises to be a busy three weeks for Welling United, starting on Saturday with a home game against Wrexham.
Away midweek games on the following three Tuesdays mean that Dean Frost’s young squad will be stretched to the full.
Their disappointing fourteen match run since last winning a Vanarama National League match has left them in serious danger. There are still fifteen matches remaining but they will need to start picking up some points quickly.
Seven new players have signed in the last four weeks and are having to gel quickly so Frost is in two minds on whether to make further changes, and how to do it.
“It’s something I have to think about. We’ve got five on loan but it’s in my mind. There’s a few players I wanted in the loan window but they were all ten to fourteen days away. I may ring their clubs now and see if they are available. The problem is I can only name five in the squad. The goalkeeper and left back is enforced.
“It’s difficult because Loui made two or three signings before we got here then I made three or four additions in a very short space of time so it makes it very difficult to gel. I think it’s very clear we need some threat in the final third. That’s something that probably should have been addressed a long time ago.”
Injuries haven’t helped. Following his groin strain, Sam Corne has picked up a secondary injury. Frost accepted “He might have to train once a week, and play, and we’ll have to get him through the season.”
Better news for Frost was that Kevin Lokko returned to training this week and will be available for selection again soon.
Visitors, Wrexham, will be just as keen to pick up points as they are lurking a few points outside the play-off zone and know that a good run can help them achieve their aim of returning to the Football League.
When the two teams met earlier in the season, it appeared that Welling were going to hold out for a hard fought draw until a brilliant 90th minute solo goal by former Wing Dom Vose, sent the home supporters delirious. Vose has now moved on to Scunthorpe United but Wrexham still have ex-Welling players Jamal Fyfied and Blaine Hudson at the heart of there defence.
Last season’s corresponding fixture at Park View Road ended with a Welling victory that was vital in keeping them up. Sam Berry headed them into the lead from a Vose corner inside the first ten minutes before Ross Lafayette set up Vose to double their lead before half time.
Andy Bishop pulled one back in the second half and Welling had to weather a storm to cling on the three points.
“It’s going to be tough but it’s winnable.” said Frost as Welling look for the victory to get them a boost going into the hectic spell.
