After long trips to Plymouth and Grimsby in the space of four days, Welling United having a free Saturday last weekend may not have come at a bad time.
The Wings players carrying knocks and coming back from injury were able to rest up and should be refreshed and ready for Saturday’s game at home to Wrexham.
Last season, the team from North Wales came close to promotion but lost out in the play-off finals. They had a happier Wembley appearance earlier in the season when they won the F.A. Trophy.
It has been a little harder for them this season and they are placed fifteenth in the league at present, two places and two points behind Welling. They will be without the suspended Jay Harris in midfield while captain Dean Keates will undertake a late fitness test for an injured toe.
Welling captain Lee Clarke, who had to sit out the trip to Grimsby through suspension, will be available and will be expected to fill the vacancy left by the departure of midfielder Alex Dyer, who has accepted the opportunity to further his football career in Swedish football’s second tier.
Whether player-manager Jamie Day starts will depend on the fitness of Harry Beautyman and how he wants to approach the match. Five games in fifteen days should give both ample playing opportunities.
In defence, Doug Bergqvist should be ready to challenge for a starting place and Day will be hoping that Loui Fazakerley, and maybe Jack Obersteller, will be able to participate during the festive period.
Luis Cumbers’ cameo appearances at Plymouth and Grimsby bode well as he looks to build himself back up to full fitness and news is awaited of Loick Pires’ injury recovery.
On the first day of the season, Wrexham and Welling United met at the Racecourse Ground. Joe Clarke put the hosts ahead in the 17th minute but Joe Healy equalised just before half time. Substitute Robert Ogleby netted the winner for Wrexham with seven minutes left, just one minute after coming on.
Any over 18 attending the last Welling game before Christmas will be offered cake and wine whilst the first 50 under 12s will be given a selection box. There will also be a happy hour in the bar between 13:30 and 14:30.
