Following three games in eight days, Welling United will have enjoyed the short break ahead of two games in three days this weekend.
The club started with a 1-1 draw against a very determined AFC Telford United before the part time team were beaten convincingly on two long trips.
Torquay United away on a Tuesday night was a tough ask with some players having to work the following day. Three-nil flattered the hosts a little as Welling pushed them hard in the second half and had no luck with the big decisions.
Another long journey, to FC Halifax, a few days later took may have taken its toll as the Shaymen dominated, especially in the second half. It is fair to say that the three-nil scoreline was a fair reflection on this occasion.
Welling’s situation was not helped by the loss of Joe Healy to injury in just the tenth minute leaving them desperately short of experience in attacking areas. Manager Jamie Day will be hoping he makes a rapid recovery.
Ben Jefford missed the trip through injury but Barney Williams deputised as Day went for five along the back allowing Zach Fagan to make his Wings league debut.
Attacking options will be increased as Day has brought in Jon Nouble on loan from Dagenham and Redbridge. Kieron St Aimie should also be available having missed the first three games through suspension. Malachi Hudson, who impressed in pre-season, still appears to be a week or two away from recovering from injury.
On Saturday, Welling entertain Woking. Last season the Wings recorded the double over the Surrey team winning 4-2 away and 3-0 at home. The Cards had a storming end to the season and are unbeaten after three games so far this term. Chris Arthur may feature for them having been drafted in on a one month loan from AFC Wimbledon.
Then, on Monday, Welling visit newly promoted big spending Eastleigh who have started with two wins and a draw. They, too, may be unveiling a new signing as Matt Fry has just joined from Concord Rangers.
